Coldworking glass art damage or injury.

Do I ever break things?

Glass is inherently fragile by nature and the coldworking process can be somewhat aggressive so rarely, it does happen; but I’d say things break more “naturally” due to the way they are made, bottoms being too thin, color incompatibility, bad packing/shipping, stress, etc.

After years of working with glass, the way things break, the step in the process they break in, if they continue to break after the initial break, and the type of crack that occurs tells me a lot about what is happening with the glass.

All that being said, I am only human, accidents sometimes happen but it’s rare.

Do I ever get hurt?

Coldworking can be very dangerous for numerous reasons.

  • First off, glass is sharp, so minor cuts and nicks are part of my everyday life. Yes, things have been more serious, I have had stitches on multiple occasions.

  • Second, the equipment I use in the coldshop can cause more damage than the glass. All my machines are run with water and spin in one way or another which can cause all sorts of issues.

  • Thirdly, coldworking can take a physical toll on your body, often requiring me to hold/carry heavy awkward objects in unnatural ways for long periods of times. My back and wrists probably get the brunt of the damage.

At the end of the day, you can trust me with your treasured piece of art. I take great care to ensure it returns to you in better shape than before. I'd love to work together, so just reach out so we can start a conversation.
